Week 52 · Emotions and self

Standing up to peer pressure

Staying true to yourself sometimes means saying 'no', even to friends.

Why it matters

Children, and teenagers especially, want to belong, so the pull of their peers can be very strong. A child who has practised saying 'no' calmly, and who knows they will be heard at home without anger, finds it easier to stay away from risky games, harmful habits and cruelty to others. The courage to choose for yourself is a skill that grows with practice.
