My child forgets what they've learned

Knew the lesson in the evening but remembered nothing in class next morning? It's rarely laziness and more often the way of studying: recalling, spaced practice and enough sleep make learning stick.

What you may notice

  • They know the lesson at home but can't recall it in class or in a test.
  • A rule they knew well last week seems brand new to them today.
  • They reread a text several times and say 'I know it', but can't retell it without the book.
  • Halfway through a maths problem they forget what it was asking.
  • They say 'My memory is bad' and give up quickly.
